Business Challenge
Song Galaxy is an international company producing MP3 and MIDI karaoke music files.
The Axmor PDA Solutions team has delivered a PDA Karaoke Player to play karaoke
music files on handhelds. When music plays, the song lyrics appear on the screen
and the syllables currently being played are highlighted in sync with the music.
Song Galaxy distributes the Karaoke Player in the market, and sells music files
to be played using the software on PDAs.
Our customer already had a Karaoke Player in place for J2ME mobile phones delivered
by a third-party company. Their solution developers chose the J2ME platform for
its interoperability and expected that the J2ME platform would allow for solution
use on a large number of Java-enabled mobile phones.
However, the solution worked properly on only a few target phone models. In most
cases, the lyrics appearing on the screen were not synchronized with the music flow.
Therefore, the solution was not ready to be launched into the market. The customer
asked Axmor experts to find a remedy and fix the problem.
Software Solution
The key obstacle to problem resolution was that different Java-enabled phones have
variations in multimedia API implementation. To fix the problem for multiple phone
models and ensure that the solution works smoothly on all target mobile phone models,
Axmor developers needed to utilize their knowledge of technical specifications and
restrictions for different mobile phones.
Axmor J2ME developers engaged their extensive mobile
solutions knowledge base and worked out a creative solution to the customer problem.
The lyrics now appear in sync with the music played on all of the target mobile
phone models: Nokia 3650/6600, Nokia N'Gage, Motorola v300/ v400/v 500/ v 600. Song
Galaxy is now able to launch the fault-free solution into the market. Axmor engineers
have also simplified the solution code resulting in memory release.
In addition to de-bugging the solution, Axmor developers enriched the application
functionality as well. For example, scrolling through the lyrics on mobile phone
display was added. Given the small size of the phone screen, this functionality
has proven to be a valuable improvement for customers.
