CUSTOMER:

Provider of warehousing and order-handling services for a large chain of supermarkets.

Business Challenge

Our customer needed a mobile warehouse management solution to track each van’s stock and to reduce loading time and paper work.

Software Solution

Axmor’s Java ME developers advised our customer to equip their delivery personnel with mobile phones accompanied by Bluetooth enabled barcode readers. This portable workstation enables the user to manage warehouse operations, such as receipt and delivery of goods.

Our customer was interested in keeping the total cost of the solution to a minimum, so our Java ME developers recommended a mobile phone as a hardware platform. The mobile phone is used to communicate with the agent, thus eliminating the need of additional devices. Because memory space to save barcode information of at least 1000 articles was necessary, we gave a preference to Nokia smartphones.

The developed software solution assists agents during loading and shipment:

  • Goods Acceptance

At the warehouse, the agent connects the mobile phone to a PC via Bluetooth and uploads a loading bill to the phone. While loading the van, articles are scanned with a barcode reader and the data is transferred to the phone via Bluetooth to accept the bill.

  • Shipment

During the trip, the agent receives orders on the mobile phone over GPRS. During delivery, the agent scans the ordered articles with a barcode reader. The scanned data is transferred to the phone via Bluetooth and the number of goods in stock decreases accordingly in the phone-based warehouse application, thus reflecting how many goods are now available.

  • Inventory

At the end of the trip, the agent returns damaged goods and goods with expired dates of usage to the warehouse. The returned goods are scanned with the barcode reader and the data is transferred to the mobile phone via Bluetooth to create a record of these returned goods. This record, completed orders, and the inventory list are then uploaded from the phone to the warehouse PC via Bluetooth.

The developed application has a convenient interface that doesn’t require much training, and it allows the customer to easily integrate the software into daily operations.
