Business Challenge
Our customer needed a solution that would allow excavator operators to visually
monitor backhoes and other earth-digging heavy excavator equipment, when operating
at night or under water, and to achieve greater depth-gauging accuracy. Our customer’s
excising solution of laser sensors and control unit was able to send text messages
to the operator, but a Palm programmer was needed to visualize the excavator on
a PDA screen based on the sensors’ data.
Software Solution
Axmor’s PDA programmers delivered a Palm application
that takes data from the control unit and creates an image reflecting the excavator’s
position on the operator’s PDA.
Our customer developed a control unit, which monitors sensors, captures measurements
and generates recommendations for the operator. Our mobile developers needed to
show an image of the excavator on the Palm screen. To communicate with the control
unit, Axmor designed a set of commands about the actual excavator’s position that
the control unit sends to the PDA:
- Stick Angle
- Bucket position
- Excavator Coordinates
- Ground Colors
- Ground Level
The Control Unit communicates with the Palm Tungsten 5 device through an RS232 port
and USB adaptor. The Palm application receives commands in developed format and
creates an image based on the supplied data.
